Registration opens: December 1, 2020

Registration closes: February 16, 2021

 

For students working on a group project, the first student to register will create the entry.  That student will then give their fellow group members the “team key”.

All submissions must be submitted electronically by February 15th for early judging.

Thank you for taking part in the 2021 National History Day program.  This is an exciting educational opportunity that allows your students to develop their research and writing skills while learning history and demonstrating their talents and creativity. It is also an excellent vehicle for Project Based Learning.  The program starts at the school or district level with the top three (3) entries in each category advancing to the Region 21 History Day contest.

The Region 21 History Day Contest will be held Saturday, March 6, 2021 on the campus of The University of Texas at Arlington.  It is co-sponsored by the University of Texas at Arlington Department of History and Arlington ISD. The theme for this year is “Communication in History: the Key to Understanding”.  History Day is open to all students in grades 6 through 12.  The Junior Division consists of grades 6 through 8 and the Senior Division includes grades 9 through 12.  Students may enter in the categories of Historical Paper, Individual or Group Exhibit, Individual or Group Performance, Individual or Group Documentary, and Individual or Group Interpretive Web Site.  Each school will be limited to 3 entries in each category. (Do not do this by grade level, but by division.)  The top two finalists in each category will advance to the Texas History Day Contest.

Fort Worth and Arlington Regional History Day

Judges play a very critical part in the success of History Day.  We cannot host the contest without our judges. Our judges in the past have found it to be a very rewarding experience.  Many of the students have become experts in their area of research and you can learn so much about history from them.  With your help, our student participants have an opportunity to progress to Texas History Day and maybe even National History Day. 

If you are confirmed as a National Contest judge, you will receive detailed instructions and materials to help you prepare for your busy days. The morning begins with a judging orientation and meeting your fellow judges.

Entries are scheduled at specific time intervals, depending on which category you are judging. There will be a lunch break midday. You will complete evaluations for each entry and submit other paperwork.

After the last entry in your judging group has finished, you and your judging teammates will discuss comments and ratings, and come to a conclusion about the final overall rankings for the entries in your group.

Judging Criteria

Historical Quality (60%)

  • Historical accuracy
  • Historical context
  • Analysis and interpretation
  • Use of available primary sources
  • Wide research
  • Balanced research

Relation to Theme (20%)

  • Clearly relates to theme
  • Demonstrates significance of topic in history and draws conclusions

Clarity of Presentation (20%)

  • Presentation, written materials are original, clear, appropriate, organized and articulate
  • Entry is organized; visual impact is appropriate to topic

Category Specific Judging Guides

Conflict of Interest

Judge’s  must inform the contest coordinator of any potential conflict of interest related to their judging, which could include judging a student, or category with several students, in which s/he has mentored a
participant, personally known a participant or previously judged a participant this year.
